RIVER NORTH LOFT
PROJECT BRIEF
This wood timber loft, overlooking the Chicago River, boasts expansive windows that flood the space with abundant natural light. However, the previous interior design and lighting solutions failed to complement the architectural potential of the space. Notably, the prior lighting design featured an awkwardly suspended 8-foot-long white track light, oriented diagonally, in each bedroom, providing minimal flexibility and leaving much to be desired. Hoiland Studios reimagined the lighting by seamlessly integrating modern black track lighting with the loft's exposed wood ceilings, pipes, and ducts. Every mounting height and track location was thoughtfully considered to optimize the illumination of architectural features, artwork, and furnishings, while respecting the loft’s industrial charm. Rectangular track systems were used to demarcate and define the open concept living area, creating a clear sense of structure within the expansive, airy space. By suspending the track on sleek aircraft cables rather than rigid stems, the design achieves a lighter, more open aesthetic that complements the loft's expansive volume. The final result is a harmonious blend of function and form, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere that enhances the overall living experience and transforms the loft into a serene, restful retreat at the end of the day.
