PALM SPRINGS VILLA

PROJECT BRIEF

Nestled in the historic Tennis Club District of Palm Springs, CA, this villa, originally designed by renowned architect William F. Cody in the 1960s, exemplifies a refined take on mid-century modern elegance.  Hoiland Studios worked closely with the Palm Springs-based client and design team to craft a lighting strategy to enhance the villa’s clean lines while honoring its mid-century roots.  By incorporating round, flangeless recessed lights that seamlessly blend into the ceiling during the day, paired with layers of concealed, indirect linear lighting, Hoiland Studios preserved the clean ceiling aesthetic.  In the primary bedroom, the team encountered a challenge when attempting to recess a cove slot to illuminate the textured wallcovering with concealed linear lighting, due to the existing joists running perpendicular to the wall.  To resolve this, Hoiland Studios extended the shade valence around the corner, cleverly concealing the fixture.  This solution allowed for the installation of concealed linear cove lighting, which softly accentuates the wall’s textured surface.  Recessed lights above the bed, controlled independently from the rest of the lighting, highlight the luxurious textiles, elevating the bedroom’s serene atmosphere.  A customized lighting control system with single-gang keypads allows the owner to effortlessly set the “Cocktails” scene, transforming the space into a warm and intimate setting just before guests arrive.
