ST. JOHN CANTIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH
PROJECT BRIEF, PART I
Hoiland Studios was tasked with enhancing the lighting for the recently restored painting of St. John Cantius, the congregation's namesake, prominently displayed on the high altar of St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Chicago, IL. The original utility floodlight only provided a dim, insufficient wash on the lower half of the artwork. After careful evaluation of potential fixture locations, Hoiland Studios decided to retain the original position behind the central altarpiece, simplifying the installation and maintaining the integrity of the altar design. To ensure the painting became the primary focal point on the altar, the team measured the existing light levels and ran precise photometric calculations. Four fixtures, equipped with two specific beam optics, were then installed and expertly aimed to deliver an even wash of light across the artwork - an especially challenging feat, given their close proximity to the painting.
PROJECT BRIEF, PART II
Hoiland Studios continued its collaboration with the church to enhance the lighting in the side chapels and devotional displays. During this process, a new painting of “The Divine Mercy” was commissioned, and the lighting scheme was designed before the artwork was completed. Without knowing the exact focal point, Hoiland Studios employed a dual-layer lighting approach: two small, discreet monopoints integrated into the top of the altarpiece, paired with an upward-facing art light at the base. This carefully coordinated strategy illuminated the new piece as a dynamic focal point within one of the church’s side chapels, creating a welcoming and contemplative atmosphere.
