GOLD COAST PRIMARY SUITE

PROJECT BRIEF

Before the renovation of this primary suite in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood, the bedroom featured dated soffits on either side of the room, with recessed lights above the bed and in front of the millwork wall.  This design, all too familiar in high-rise condos, created harsh scallops and high-contrast shadows, disrupting the sense of tranquility.  To transform the space into a serene sanctuary, Hoiland Studios introduced recessed cove lighting along the headboard wall, casting a soft, ambient glow that envelops the room in warmth. Additionally, a recessed linear wall-washer was seamlessly integrated into the soffit above the millwork, positioned as far from the shelves as possible to achieve a smooth, even wash of light that beautifully highlights the owner’s curated collection.  Recessed cove lighting in the shower extended this peaceful atmosphere into the primary bathroom, resulting in a serene oasis above the bustling city.
